Our History
The Arizona Sugar Glider Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation founded for the purpose of helping pet sugar gliders have happy healthy lives. We not only rescue and rehome sugar gliders, we also offer education and mentoring to prospective and current glider parents.
We are an all volunteer rescue that is passionate about helping sugar gliders in need. This passion began in 2010 for the founders of AZSGR. After 4 years of researching gliders, Dan and Tamra took the plunge and fell head over heels in love with 3 little boys, Apollo, Artemis and Zeus. Shortly after becoming parents to these 3 delights, they became aware of an ad on Craigslist. A man had taken 4 sick gliders in and was unable to find help to get them veterinary care. By the time Tamra contacted the man, the 4 gliders had died. Shortly after that horrific experience they found 2 sugar gliders being sold at a yard sale. They were filthy, smelly, and had become wild over years of enduring improper care and a lack of socialization. These 2 gliders, later named Bonnie and Clyde, became the first rescues of AZSGR and the inspiration to focus our efforts on education and awareness! Our 501(c)(3) non profit status was granted on March 29, 2011. After hedgehogs became legal to own as pets in February 2016, we expanded our efforts to include helping hedgehogs in need. We have helped rescue and rehome more than 30 hedgehogs as of August 2017.
